Palais de Justice de Marseille

A neoclassical building in the heart of Marseille

Located at Place Monthyon, in the 6th arrondissement of Marseille, the Palais de Justice is a remarkable example of neoclassical architecture. Designed by the architect Auguste Martin, its construction took place between 1856 and 1862 on the grounds of the former Arsenal des galères.

An imposing and symbolic façade

The main façade of the palace, facing Place Monthyon, is characterized by a staircase of 25 steps leading to a peristyle with six Ionic columns. The triangular pediment is adorned with an allegorical representation of Justice, surrounded by Strength, Prudence, Innocence, and the Defeated Crime. These sculptures were created by Eugène Guillaume.

An interior combining solemnity and brightness

Inside, the hall of lost steps is illuminated by a skylight reaching 15 meters in height, providing impressive natural light. The courtrooms, recently renovated, combine solemnity and serenity thanks to soft hues and the restoration of original woodwork and sculptures.

A place rich in judicial history

The Palais de Justice of Marseille replaced the former palace located at Place Daviel, which became too cramped in the early 19th century. Since its inauguration in 1862, it has been the setting for many emblematic trials, reflecting the evolution of the French judicial system.
