The fascinating history of Palais Longchamp
The Palais Longchamp is primarily a tribute to the mastery of water. The construction of this monument celebrated the long-awaited arrival of drinking water in Marseille, a city that had suffered for centuries. After a cholera epidemic in 1835, it became imperative to find a solution. The city then chose to dig a canal to capture water from the Durance.
It was Franz Mayor de Montricher, an engineer of bridges and roads, who undertook this ambitious project of 93 km in length. After 15 years of work, the canal was finally completed and water began to irrigate the city. To mark this achievement, the architect Henry Espérandieu (who also designed the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde) erected the Palais Longchamp, a monumental building that also serves as a water tower. Completed in 1869, this architectural masterpiece is adorned with a magnificent colonnade that connects two museums: the Naturhistorisk Museum and the Fine Arts Museum.
