The Intercontinental Hôtel Dieu is much more than just a luxury hotel in Marseille: it is a true historical gem in the heart of the city. Located in the Panier district, one of the oldest in Marseille, it overlooks the Vieux Port with its majestic appearance. Facing the Town Hall, this historic monument attracts the gaze of visitors in search of authenticity and refinement.
An iconic place with a fascinating past
Did you know that hôtels-Dieu in France date back to the 7th century? Originally, they served to house pilgrims and care for the sick. The site of the current Hôtel Dieu in Marseille dates back to 1166, with the Hospital of the Holy Spirit, built by the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit on the remains of Roman baths. An incredible Roman mosaic was even found beneath the building, bearing witness to the antiquity and rich history of this place.

In 1593, this hospital became the Hôtel Dieu of Marseille. Charles de Cazaulx, consul of the city, united the hospitals of the Holy Spirit and Saint James of Galicia. In the 18th century, thanks to the king’s architect Jacques Hardouin-Mansart, the hospital took its current form, marking a major milestone in hospital architecture.
From hospital to grand hotel
After centuries of medical activities, the Hôtel Dieu ceased its functions in 1993, before being purchased in 2006 by AXA to become the Intercontinental we know today. Between 2006 and 2013, this monument underwent a spectacular transformation, while preserving its historical soul and charm. Since its inauguration in 2013, the Intercontinental Hôtel Dieu dazzles with its sound and light show, illuminating its magnificent façades every evening.
Today, the hotel welcomes both heritage lovers and luxury enthusiasts. Enjoy the panoramic terrace for stunning views of the Bonne Mère, the Vieux Port, and the galleries with their semi-circular arches. You will be surrounded by a chic and minimalist decor, where every detail exudes elegance.
