Fontaine Estrangin

In the heart of the 6th arrondissement of Marseille, the Estrangin-Pastré Square houses a jewel of local heritage: the Estrangin Fountain. Given to the city in 1890 by the trader Henri Estrangin, this work is the result of collaboration between architect Joseph Letz and sculptor André-Joseph Allar.

An Allegorical Work Celebrating Commerce

The fountain is distinguished by its representation of the four continents: Asia, Africa, America, and Europe. At the top, a female figure symbolizes Marseille, reminding us of the importance of international trade for the Phocean city.

A Remarkable Architectural Setting

The Estrangin-Pastré Square is surrounded by iconic buildings, such as the Bank of France hotel, built between 1885 and 1886, and the savings bank hotel, constructed in 1904 according to the plans of architect Tournaire. These structures add significant historical and architectural dimensions to the ensemble.

A Must-Visit Transit Point

Located at the intersection of Rue Paradis and Cours Pierre-Puget, Estrangin-Pastré Square is a convergence point for residents and visitors alike. The Estrangin – Prefecture metro station facilitates access to this site, making it a popular meeting spot.

A Cultural Stop During Your Visit

During your exploration of Marseille, a pause at the Estrangin Fountain offers an immersion into the city’s history and architecture. The sculptural details and the peaceful atmosphere of the square make it a rewarding stop for heritage enthusiasts.

The Estrangin Fountain remains a precious testimony of Marseille’s commercial past, inviting every visitor to appreciate the cultural richness of the city.
