Consulate General of the United States in Marseille

A Diplomatic Heritage Since 1793

The Consulate General of the United States in Marseille is one of the oldest American diplomatic missions abroad. The first American representative in Marseille was Étienne Cathalan, a French honorary consul, who established the first consular offices at 48, rue de la Paix Marcel-Paul, and then at 6, rue Sainte. These initial locations were near the current site of the consulate.

A Refuge During World War II

As World War II approached, the consulate played a crucial role in assisting a large number of European refugees seeking to escape Nazi persecution. Thousands of people turned to the consulate for entry visas to the United States. In response to this influx, visa processing operations were moved to larger facilities on the outskirts of the city.

A Tribute to Varian Fry

The current address of the consulate, located at 12, boulevard Paul-Peytral, is named Place Varian Fry in honor of the American journalist who, between 1940 and 1941, helped hundreds of refugees, including intellectuals and artists, escape Nazi persecution. Among them were prominent figures such as Hannah Arendt, Max Ernst, and Marc Chagall.

Consular Services Today

Today, the consulate employs a team of five American citizens and 21 local staff. It offers a full range of consular services, including assistance to American citizens residing or traveling in southern France, as well as promoting commercial and cultural relations between the United States and the region.
